This article examines the functions of the image in the documentation of contemporary art as well as the relationship between image, documentation and artwork. We consider these issues through case study analysis of the website Documents d’artistes Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, providing natively digital documentation of regional contemporary art which is free from the normative practices of museum documentation. This digital documentation results in a collection of editorialized images, through which one can navigate using the digital image as a "go-between sign." Digital images thus serve a triple mediating function and offer the viewer a composite documentary representation that gives a cognitive account of the complexity of the hyper-work.
