A free commentary on the practice of correctional hearingsCriminal hearings are public meetings at which charges and, where appropriate, the awarding of damages are debated. What matters is the manner in which hearings are prepared and conducted, and the reasons given for the decisions. This article seeks to shed light on this process, which is all too rarely explained. Written in the first person, it is the fruit of a personal reflection without claiming to propose a specific methodology for judgement. Its sole purpose is to shed light on the act of judging in a given situation. By giving us a behind-the-scenes insight into the activities of a criminal court judge, it follows on from the article entitled “L'audience c'est ici et maintenant” (The Hearing is Here and Now), published in issue 2024/2 (“Les langues du procès”) of Cahiers de la justice.
