The Salafization of Niger Society and the State - 2024.

12

‪Since the coup in Niger in July 2023, two groups have come to the forefront of Niger’s political scene: the military and the jihadists. But we should not forget a third group, the Salafists, who are less visible from outside, but who have a real popular base and, like the first two, are also hostile to both the democratic system and Western supremacy. The Salafist ideology, which preaches intolerance, has gradually become unescapable in Niger, and aims to replace the secular State with an Islamic one. After recalling the evolution of relations between Islam and the State in Niger, this article describes the process of Salafization of everyday life in Niger, in both the social and public spheres. To date, however, Salafism has not directly penetrated the political arena.‪
