Science and society: how are research careers changing? - 2025.

Scientific research is currently undergoing a substantial transformation, that moves beyond the conventional boundaries of discipline-centric methodologies based on individual publishing. The scientific community is expanding its focus beyond the quest for fundamental knowledge, now driven by a stronger awareness of global societal issues, particularly in areas such as health and the environment. These challenges ask for feasible solutions that engage ordinary citizens. Disciplinary sciences, confined to their specific domains, are reaching their limits in addressing the complexity of today’s challenges, which require an openness to diverse fields of knowledge. In crucial areas such as public health and the environment, an interdisciplinary approach is essential for providing effective solutions. To enable this shift, it is essential to establish the conditions for a type of research that actively involves society. This inclusivity goes beyond researchers and encompasses non-researchers, involving them in the design and implementation of scientific projects. Researchers are now taking significant responsibilities regarding the major issues shaping our world.
