The Sources of a Religious “Otherness” in the Revolution: Rabaut Saint-Étienne, or the Radicalization of Protestant Representations - 2014.

Having exercised pastoral duties in Nîmes, Rabaut Saint-Étienne participated in different works and revolutionary assemblies in Paris. During the 1790s, he appeared in caricatures, pamphlets, and works of propaganda that became means of expressing fantasies and denigration. Beyond the anecdotal, these works revealed what this pastor represented to some of his contemporaries, and by way of this emblematic persona, they reflected attitudes towards Protestantism as well. This study will follow how this historical figure, through his religion and his role in the Revolution, embodied the ideal scapegoat for detractors and partisans of the Revolution.
