Collective Emotions and the Federative Movement (1789–1790) - 2013.

3

Between the summers of 1789 and 1790, the Federative movement swept across France. What began as local National Guard rallies soon became vast gatherings, drawing tens and soon hundreds of thousands of participants. This paper emphasizes the role of collective emotions??”whether fraternal union or fear of enemies??”within the movement and in its spread through pamphlet, newspaper, and epistolary accounts. Whereas the study of emotions during the Revolution has largely been limited to their literary manifestations and their effects on elites, this project looks at how emotions at large-scale gatherings helped shape the period.
