Slavery and Bride-Price

Testart, Alain

Slavery and Bride-Price - 2004.

76

This article reexamines ancient ethnographical sources relating to the Thracians, mainly Greek in origin. New translations are provided and the authors draw on recent research in comparative anthropology to consider two sets of institutions: the bride price, so different from the Greek dowry, and internal slavery (the sale of children into slavery and enslavement for debts). The authors demonstrate the links between these two practices and tease out their implications, particularly in terms of politics.
