Count Rotrou of Perche in Aragon: A Franco nobleman in the Reconquista at the beginning of the twelfth century - 2022.

57

In Aragon, under the reign of Alfonso the Battler (1104–1134) the Francos were the largest group of noblemen and occupied the most important positions in the kingdom. A few stand out, such as Gaston of Bearn and Centulle of Bigorre. A third person is often associated with them, Count Rotrou of Perche. However, he has been little studied and, when he has, only from the “French” or “Spanish” perspective. The study of Rotrou’s career in Aragon lacks an overall vision. The two aspects of his trajectory are rarely looked at in relation to each other, despite this being essential to understanding the person and his actions. The aim of this article is to place the Count of Perche in the context of the flow toward the peninsula drained by the Reconquista at the beginning of the twelfth century, to estimate his importance in the kingdom of Alfonso the Battler, and to understand how he simultaneously continued to rule over his territory north of the Loire.
