The restitution of the boundaries of Roman territories is mainly based on a regressive approach. Here we take a critical look at the reconstruction work carried out on the territories of Gaul-Belgium via the geographic information system (GIS) Atlas des provinces romaines de Belgique et de Germanie, through which we present the various layers of mapped and analyzed data. Rare ancient data can thus be compared with medieval territories (Merovingian pagi, thirteenth- and fourteenth-century dioceses) and, to a lesser extent, with toponymy. The mapping of Merovingian and Carolingian pagi also leads us to remark on their distribution and on their relationship with other territorial categories of the early Middle Ages, notably the diocese.
