The Northern facade of the Baths of Cluny was excavated in 1947–1948 by P.-M. Duval and has ever since, in many publications, been identified as the monumental entrance to the baths. This does not explain the recognizable ruins. A review of the documentation and new analysis of the remains suggest that there was a monumental fountain at the center of the "façade" fed by the waters of the baths. This is one of the most imposing of such structures in Gallo-Roman architecture. The new interpretation requires that the understanding of the circulation of visitors and of the monument's place in the civic plan of Lutetia be revised.
