America Works is a small, for-profit private employment agency which «helps» those on some kind of public support get back to work. Funded for the most part by one-year renewable contracts, it draws its legitimacy from its effective treatment of «welfare cases» as well as its costs, which are lower than those of the public social services. Based on observations in the company’s New York office, the present text describes the dismantling of the welfare system and the privatization of its management. It also raises questions about the conditions of the effectiveness of the treatment dealt out by America Works: mediators perfectly predisposed to be convinced and convincing repeat time and again, on a moral mode, the reality of a social and professional world that has been almost entirely deregulated.
