The clays used in the Middle Ages and in the Early Modern period by the tile makers of Barbery (Calvados) - 2024.

‪Between the 14th and 18th centuries, in Barbery (Calvados, France), several tileries produced the materials used to cover a large number of buildings in the Caen plain and the Falaise region. The abundance of written sources (tabellionage, accounts, iconography) prompted the implementation of a multidisciplinary research programme aimed at studying the operating chain from the extraction of the raw material to the distribution of the finished products. This article presents the results of geological, geomechanical, petrographic and geochemical approaches, which have made it possible to identify the sites where the clay material was extracted, to characterise its properties and to shed light on the choices made by the tile makers for the terracotta objects and the construction of the kilns.‪
