Two paradoxical images summarize the relationship of the Saint Simonian Gustave d’Eichthal to Judaism: on the one hand, the rupture constituted by his conversion to Catholicism; and on the other, his continued assertion of a Jewish identity and the central place of Judaism in his political, intellectual and spiritual reflection. This article reexamines these links in terms of the religious reconfigurations at work, not only in the Saint-Simonian movement and in the definition of New Christianity, but also within a Judaism affected, in France and Germany, by major changes throughout the nineteenth century.
