Le Droit and the Outaouais Region during the First World War - 2017.

28

The experience of the First World War marked a turning point for the Dominion of Canada taking its first step towards greater national autonomy vis-à-vis the British Empire. This era was also characterized by numerous crises and social tensions that define today’s collective memory of the war experience. An ever-increasing demand for military manpower and increased tensions between French and English Canadians pushed underlying conflicts to the surface and transformed Canada into a tinderbox during the last years of the war. The cities of Montréal and Québec were the scene for a great part of these issues. However, because of its unique geographical location, the Outaouais region witnessed a very different experience of war, whereas struggles for the rights of the French-speaking minority overshadowed news coverage of the war by the regional daily newspaper Le Droit.
