From 1974 to 1981, Valéry Giscard d'Estaing’s France and Tito's Yugoslavia both pursued independent foreign policies in the context of West and East power struggles. Since the nineteenth century, Yugoslavs have immigrated to France; migration policies implemented in the 1970s continue to hamper French policies toward migrants and produce complex relationships between the different generations of immigrants. Stereotypes produced by French society disregard the diverse Yugoslav identities and contribute to the stigmatization of migrants.
