This article explores the role of businessmen, described by Marshall, in progressing toward a social ideal. Analysis is based on a perfectionist reappraisal of Marshall’s principle of justice, supported by a historical perspective and some of his unpublished papers. A broadening of businessmen’s economic chivalry in the social space is updated and questioned. More particularly, attention is paid to the evolutionist conception of morality that underlies this process.
