Photographs by the Information and Propaganda Service of the colonial administration, conserved today at the Taratra National Agency, were taken after the Malagasy insurrection of 29-30 March on 1947. These represent images of angry Europeans in revolt against the central administration in Madagascar. During the night of 29-30 March, armed Malagasy people attacked military barracks, administration offices and private colonial properties. Surprised, panic-stricken settlers gathered together in front of the gate of the French Residency, headquarters of the central authority, in order to demand an island-wide general state of siege and the departure of the High Commissioner. These images give evidence of internal uneasiness amongst the Vazaha, the predominating whites during this period.
