The page is more a location than a space. It shares the values of location such as intimacy and center, its ability to relate an event and accommodate history (i.e. in the same manner as ancient memory theaters). As a “location of memory” it enacts a mnemotechnic system within the arrangement of the text. It also carries in itself a memory of its history and its founding imaginary, since it continually draws the dizzy heights of its depth toward its surface. An alchemical location constructed by the ruling that transmutes time into space within a book, a link location structured by the line opens up and is crossed by exchange, doubling into its margins, hollowing out to make space for the reader for whom the white space is home. With a few images, this article offers a quick journey through the dizzy heights and knowledge of the thinking machine that is the page—heir of the cave wall, the first stone book, where all surface irregularities point to depth.
