This article aims to portray the afterglow of Route 66 as a mythical space of America. Route 66 is considered as a place endowed with imageability. The study of its origins and of when it became a transcontinental highway allows us to show how its identity was constructed and how its significance developed over time. By analyzing its use as a path and as a territory, the route is traced back to its division and the joint loss of its sign and its use. This eclipsing of the route is documented in order to consider the process of institutional rehabilitation that contributes to its mythification. As well as looking at its current existence within the national cultural landscape, we travel one stretch of Route 66 to finally try to experience its genius loci.
