What is the role of humour, witticisms and gaffes in a psychoanalytical cure? Does the seriousness of the cure leav eany room for laughter? In his work on jokes, Freud shows how important it is to listen to anecdotes, funny stories or witticisms with fresh ears. The polysemy and poetical plurality of language is there for all to hear, if only we know how. Jokes and witticisms often serve to diminish anxiety and shed light on an unconscious issue. This paper will show how humour is dependent on the analyst’s style, while witticisms are more directly linked to a formation of the unconscious.
