Trauma and Work - Shell Shock, a Century Later - 2015.

The reworking of theories relating to trauma carried out in thewake of the First World War are largely dependent on the clinicalquestions raised by victims of shell shock. The author of thispaper highlights the fact that etiological controversies relating tothis historically dated clinical entity, along with conceptions oftrauma subsequent to them, leave no room for the subjectiveexperience of work. In the light of the specific understanding ofsuch questions drawn from the psychopathology of work, thispaper points to the rich contemporaneity of a number of metapsychological questions, raised but in no way answered by the issueof war neurosis. Then follows a theoretical discussion of the linksbetween work, violence and trauma which in turn raises thefollowing question - is it possible to devise a psychoanalyticaltheory of trauma without providing a key role for the analysis ofwork?
