What can we say about the art of medicine in the age of biomedicine? Is modern medicine still a matter of art, in the sense of the ancients, or science and technology? Supplanting religion, does it still offer us salvation, with the health of the body replacing the salvation of the soul? Do today’s doctors still have a “vocation”? The main challenge posed by these questions lies in finding an “accessible” way to ward off our finitude—of which the body is nothing but the most salient expression.
