This paper adopts a stance rooted both in sexology and anthropology and draws on clinical experience to provide an overview of the social consequences of the demands made by a generation of people in Western Europe for greater ‘sexual liberation.’This social movement was both fuelled by and triggered social changes in favour of greater equality between the sexes, and this has in turn had consequences on the family and relationships within couples. These changes shed light on hopes for obtaining ‘sexual liberation’, for asserting the ‘sexual revolution’ and the realities of ‘sexual freedom.’
