In 2021, the direct economic impact of culture, i.e. the total value-added of all areas of culture, amounted to some 45.3 billion euros, i.e. 2.0% of the economy, as compared with 2.1% in 2020.The cultural industries saw a moderate recovery in 2021 Activity levels remain below pre-crisis levels, with the health situation having not fully recovered. The value-added of the cultural sectors showed a 3.3% rise, slower than that of the French economy overall, which was up 7.5%. Viewed in terms of volume however, the cultural sectors showed a stronger recovery (7.7%), and 1.1 point higher than that of the French economy as a whole, (up by 6.6%). Nevertheless, this was not sufficient to make up for the sectors’ diminished activity in 2020, with the volume of activity remaining 10.9% lower in 2021 relative to 2019 (as compared with – 1.8% for the economy as a whole). This is particularly the case for the sectors most affected by the health crisis, such as cinema screening (with volume down 52% in 2019 and 2021), the performing arts (down 36%) and cultural heritage (down 29%). However, activity in the audiovisual (+ 2%), book publishing (+ 4%) and artistic and cultural education (+ 4%) sectors is outstripping pre-crisis levels.Audiovisual made the highest contribution to the economy in 2021, followed by the performing arts, advertising and cultural heritage. The most significant development over the last twenty years has been the structural decline of the press sector.
