A mosaic of civilizations, the Caucasus region was unified only briefly during its long history. Today, it is once again divided, between states and around divergent strategic choices. Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan are implementing contradictory choices, while Moscow is seeking to regain influence, the United States is largely ignoring the region, and the European Union seems to be tiring of an Eastern Partnership that is difficult to understand.
