F. Thureau-Dangin and H. de Genouillac, two Assyriologists attached to the Département des Antiquités orientales (Department of Oriental Antiquities) founded in 1881 at the Louvre, were initially the epigraphists on E. de Sarzec’s mission to Tello. Subsequently, they played an increasingly important role in archaeological excavations in Iraq, at Kiš, Tello, and Larsa.
