François Desgrez (1632-1705) was a member of the Paris Watch (“Guet”), a force responsible for policing the capital during the reign of Louis XIV. His name is still remembered, particularly in the Poisons affair, but his life, his work and his connections in general have remained unknown. This article aims not only to fill this gap, but also to demonstrate that the analysis of men of this calibre provides a better understanding of the Paris police in the 17th century.
