After studying sociology and psychology, Raymond Bourdoncle chose to prepare a thesis in sociology under the direction of Raymond Boudon. Thereafter, his career followed the evolutions of teacher education, of which he was a priviledged observer. After conducting research on the expectations of teachers in terms of training, and on the universitarisation of teacher training, he served as editor-in-chief for approximately 15 years of the journal Recherche et formation, which was created at the INRP in 1987 to accompany teacher education reforms.
