Digital applications for the autonomy of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder - 2018.

9

Autism Spectrum Disorders typically involve difficulties in autonomy and impact interpersonal relations. Appropriate methods and customized tools should hence be implemented to promote independence and the social inclusion of people with autism. For some years now, we acknowledge that new information and communication technologies, especially digital applications on tablets, can be a real lever in compensating the daily disabilities (visual calendar, voice synthesis, sequences, timer. . .). To be relevant and appropriate in accompanying the plurality of Autism Spectrum Disorders, these applications on digital tablets should be generally “designed with and for” users, and customizable to suit individual needs. In the first instance, we will describe the positive effects of using these tablet apps for persons with autism. Then we will focus on the interests of a comprehensive co-design approach to elaborate these tools in which users, namely the direct beneficiaries but also professionals and family caregivers, are involved in the process of creation and validation. Lastly, we will have a look at applications customization, which plays a crucial role in learning mechanisms and daily use.
