To write the social history of 19th-centurycultural practices the sources are not lacking : a lot of writings dealing with economic, administrative, and legal issues of theatrical life have been produced and preserved. But these documents promote dissemination and naturalization of liberalism, as a system of values and a legitimate hermeneutic system to account for theatrical activities. How can a materialist history of 19th-century theatre be written without repeating these acts of institutionalization of liberalism?
