Court Bailiffs as Neighborhood Lawyers
Mathieu-Fritz, Alexandre
Court Bailiffs as Neighborhood Lawyers - 2004.
30
If the distribution of bailiffs on French territory is subject to stringent regulations, the established rules (restricted intake, division of activity areas into strictly defined territories - “compétences territoriales”) are not in themselves a sufficient explanation for the distribution and the spatial mobility of these professionals. Basing his analysis on the main characteristics of the geographical distribution of bailiffs and of their recent evolution, the author shows that the notion of “proximity,” frequently used to characterize their mode of activity, hides important discrepancies and that, apart from the legal and institutional constraints, the spatial inscription of these professionals is the result of a combination of diverse factors, both social and economic, linked to the exercise of the activity as well as to extraprofessional life.
