Confrontation with a deadly threat is commonly associated with psychotraumatic potential. However, some people who are close to death and are resuscitated claim to return without traumatic aftereffects, and with a more intense desire to live. What are the effects of life-threatening experiences that require treatment in intensive care? While a stay in intensive care can have psychological repercussions, including the development of post-traumatic stress disorder, especially in people with certain risk factors, we will outline a clinical case that seems to be the antithesis of this finding. In this case, it seems that the near-death experience protected the individual against the development of post-traumatic stress symptoms, and brought other beneficial changes for the subject.
