The “conversational funeral robot” bears witness to the relationship with eternal time promoted by the digital industry. (1) From the standpoint of the “magic of the word,” this invention expresses our fascination for technology when the presence of the dead is increasingly difficult to discern. (2) This is analyzed from the perspective of the ability to mourn, the ideology of “as if,” and the meaning of doubles. This reveals what is at stake in a hyper-individualistic dominant culture which transfers the criteria of the living onto death, at the risk of distorting both.
