Pollination services—renting honeybee colonies to farmers to enhance crop productivity—provides a perfect ethnographic standpoint to understand how beekeepers relate to the agricultural community. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in the Rhône valley, this article describes the strategies beekeepers deploy to be viewed as professionals. These entail promoting their expertise, their local anchoring, and their capacity to discuss sensitive topics such as pesticides. At the same time, beekeepers’ work is often under-valued, and they can be led to adopt singular stances. Professional beekeepers are thus caught up in a never-ceasing negotiation with the agricultural world.
