From 1863 to 1868, the first French mutualist bank was established. Its creator, a laborer close to the communist Cabet, was Jean-Pierre Béluze, and he named his project the “Société du Crédit au Travail” (Society of Credit for Labor). This bank aimed to serve as a working-class savings bank, offering credit to workers and promoting labor associations. Its history is an important episode of the cooperative movement in France and Europe. It reveals the independent capacity of the working classes to fight poverty.
