As an entertainment industry, professional sport has developed along two different models. In North America, the dominant model is that of franchise systems organized into cartels. Once participation in the league is confirmed, franchised teams are guaranteed to remain in the league, even after several consecutive seasons of weak sporting performance. This cartelization model introduces a very low level of uncertainty and therefore attracts numerous investors. Which is why the owners of powerful football (soccer) clubs in Europe have been tempted for years to implement a franchising system similar to the one in North American professional sports leagues. This analysis addresses this issue by indicating that the increasingly experiential nature of European top-level football could lead to the adoption of the franchise model, despite multiple hindrances.
