Senior immigrant women and their bodies. The cross effects of age, gender and migration - 2015.

10

This article examines perceptions of ageing and bodily practices of older immigrant women. The data are based on a qualitative research conducted in Quebec, Canada (Charpentier, Quéniart et Vatz-Laroussi CRSH—2011–2014) with ninety-eight elderly women from different ethno-cultural backgrounds (Arab, African, Haitian, Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese, Romanian, etc.). The results on how such immigrant women deal with their ageing bodies and the combined effects of age and gender in the light of the migration route, will be presented. The findings presented demonstrate the relevance of the intersectional approach (Crenshaw, 1994; Poiret, 2005; Dorlin, 2009) in understanding the complexity and social conditionings of women’s experiences of ageing.
