Eosinophilic esophagitis: Out of the shadows at last - 2022.

In 2017, we wrote the first overview of Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE) in HEGEL [1]. EoE is a chronic immune disease triggered by food antigens and characterized by eosinophilic infiltration into the esophagus. Within this relatively short time frame, EoE went from a confidential pathology to a rising star among gastroenterologists and drug developers. Our understanding of its pathogenic mechanisms has greatly improved, but the picture is now more complex, with the identification of EoE sub-types and increased interest in related conditions including eosinophilic gastritis and eosinophilic duodenitis (all falling under the umbrella of eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases–EGID). Diagnosis and clinical assessment have greatly improved, and targeted therapies are in late-stage development, even though there is still a long way before providing satisfactory solutions to all patients.
