Wife of... no profession: the difficult image of vocational training for women farmers (France, 1950-1980) - 2022.

Vocational education for farmers has long been neglected in education policies or, more precisely, there is a significant gap between rhetoric and reality. This can be explained by the specific nature of agricultural work, which is considered not only a job, but also a social function, with an even greater impact for women, who are first and foremost considered as mother and wife. The great transformation in French agriculture from 1950 has changed the situation very little and women farmers still have little access to vocational education. Using a wide selection of audiovisual sources from the collections of French television archives (INA), this paper seeks to show how the gender roles of women farmers have adapted and renewed themselves in spite of the rapid changes in agriculture and society. Moving pictures helped to build and disseminate such representations at a time when television was becoming the first mass medium.
