Based on the institutionalist theoretical framework of education, this article shows how apprenticeships are finding their way into the rationale of technical and vocational diplomas. This presents two interdependent aspects: the ranking of apprenticeships by qualification and segmentation of the social image of apprentices. Promoted in its time as an employment measure, the opening up of apprenticeships can be viewed first and foremost as an educational reform.
