23

Mesopotamian scholarly sources reveal a variety of attitudes towards the quantification of ingredients in cuneiform medical prescriptions. This article explores dosage practices as brought to light by BAM 579, a document from the royal library of Nineveh, which provides a record of the therapeutic knowledge recognized in the official sphere, some of whose medical prescriptions are paralleled in private archives. Comparisons between these diverse sources shed light on ingredient dosages across different contexts. This article examines the modes of dosage notation, the practitioners’ expertise and the measurement units that provide evidence of scholarly and therapeutic practices.
