The mountain hut keeper’s job is directly affected by the effects of climate change: water shortages, partial or total destruction of access paths, extreme weather events, etc. However, socio-environmental adaptation strategies are only part of the explanation for changes in working practices. The increasing complexity and multiplication of work tasks is due to various factors external to this professional group. Social and technical evolution in mountain sports (hiking, mountaineering) are generating new demands from users. These emerging needs of users are creating new tensions for the work team. But internal factors also play a major role in the evolution of the profession. In this paper, I will show how climate change is not only a constraint that forces changes in practices. It is also a driver of new ways of approaching the profession, linked to a system of social and ecological values. Thus, the structuring of the activity as a profession and evolution in the profiles of hut keepers are at the root of the emergence of new work practices and organisation.
