This paper traces how France used economic decisions as a tool to increase its international position and to fight its enemies. In the second half of the eighteenth century, the Franco-British rivalry increasingly affected maritime navigation and resulted in restrictions which put almost an end to trade with the enemy and neutral shipping in the revolutionary and Napoleonic wars.
