Rural Spaces Overspread by Economic Logic

Rural Spaces Overspread by Economic Logic - 2001.
17
This study of Provence under the Ancien Régime underlines not only the considerable burden of communal debts but also their environmental consequences from the mid-17th century onward. Starting in 1640, the date of the General Liquidation, the major part of the communal properties of villages fell into the hands of their creditors. The extensive land clearing that followed considerably worsened the impact of negative climactic conditions of the years 1651 to 1711. Thus, the control exerted by economic logic over rural spaces spread to ever-widening areas.
