BackgroundThe pharmaceutical act has become a real exchange. Hypnosis has proven effective in the medical field for improving communication and patient support.ObjectivesTo explore hypnosis in pharmaceutical practice and to propose a practical guide.MethodsWe conducted a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews with practitioners and created a practical guide for pharmacists.ResultsHypnosis is underrecognized in pharmacy practice. Questionnaire (102 respondents) and semi-structured interviews (4 practitioners) showed hypnosis can improve: communication with patients and team members; compliance; new services (such as vaccination); management of emergency situations; patient support in smoking cessation and lifestyle and dietary measures; personal development of pharmacy team members. Informal hypnosis (conversational Ericksonian hypnosis) is the best way to integrate into pharmacy practice, using positive language, diversion, (self-)suggestions, and metaphor techniques. It can be conducted at the counter or in a private room, in community and hospital pharmacies. Our study is the first to offer a 6-step practical guide for implementing hypnosis.ConclusionsHypnosis has its place in pharmacies, provided that training and legal frameworks are strengthened.
