Starting from the observation that administrations in the Arab world are ubiquitous and yet little studied, this article argues that they should be (re)made an object of research in their own right. After showing that Arab administrations have been objects of historical research and discussing some of the methodological issues involved in their construction as objects of political investigation, two main avenues of research are proposed, based on examples drawn from two ongoing surveys, one on hospital administration in Morocco and the other on social housing in Algeria. The first approach is “materialist,” inviting us to investigate the materiality of administrations and their spatial configurations. The second focuses on verbalization, seeking to shed light on the factors underlying ordinary criticism by examining remarks made by the administered to or in the vicinity of street-level bureaucrats, and what this produces in terms of interpretations and judgments about relations with the state. Partant du constat que les administrations dans les mondes arabes sont omniprésentes et pourtant peu étudiées, cet article plaide qu’elles (re)deviennent un objet et un sujet de recherche à part entière. Après avoir montré qu’elles ont été des objets de recherches historiques et discuté certains enjeux méthodologiques de leur construction en objets d’investigation politologique, deux grandes pistes de recherche sont proposées à partir d’exemples tirés de deux enquêtes en cours, l’une sur l’administration hospitalière au Maroc et l’autre sur le logement social en Algérie. La première piste est « matérialiste » et invite à investiguer la matérialité des administrations et des configurations spatiales. La seconde est la piste de l’énonciation destinée à mettre en évidence les ressorts de la critique ordinaire en s’intéressant à ce qui se dit autour et aux guichets et ce que cela produit comme interprétations et jugements sur les relations à l’État.
