Nowadays abundant, academic studies on colonization took time to impose themselves in France due to the difficulty of thinking history otherwise than in a national perspective. Taking advantage of this gap, of the state’s amnesia as well as of the appearance, worldwide, of a new approach to memoral issues, various pressure groups have launched a war of memories. According to the author, it is now time to rethink the historian’s social role.
