This article proposes to study how to hear and to understand blasphemy in the Roman de Renart and, through it, “the voice of the great layman”. To do this, we will consider its linguistic modalities, its morphological properties and the problem that the choice of direct speech causes in the effective reception of texts in the Middle Ages as well as the literary and sociohistorical stake revealed by its various uses in this book.
