Though established on a rejection of Europe and colonialism, the United States bound its national experiment to a continuous territorial expansion. Throughout the 19th century, the conquest of a continental empire and its further projection overseas was however denied in the name of national exceptionalism. From G. Washington to T. Roosevelt, the Americans never considered they were building an Empire according to the European models, but in the name of Liberty and according to their Manifest Destiny.
