The Vietnamese and Algerian liberation movements both organized a guerrilla base among mountain populations. While sharing some similarities, they faced different geo-political restraints and diverged over time. The Algerian maquis, isolated from cross-border communication, became progressively weaker and fragmented, while the Vietnamese, building on experience from communist China, were able to expand and eventually conquer the city from the inside.
